I’ve always been captivated by France—the timeless beauty of its landscapes, the charm of its historic architecture, the lyrical cadence of its language, the importance of its food, and its rich artistic culture. Yes, even the people. There’s something refreshing about their unapologetic honesty and their fierce dedication to preserving their traditions and language, a quality that echoes the authenticity of the artistic spirit. For centuries, France has been a haven for dreamers and creators, a place where artists like Van Gogh, Matisse, and Cézanne found inspiration in its golden light, vibrant landscapes, and spirited communities. With them in mind, I didn’t just want to visit—I wanted to live there.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of becoming a painter in the South of France, following in the footsteps of these great artists. The idea of immersing myself in this artistic legacy, of painting sun-soaked fields and rustic villages, always felt like a distant dream—until now.
When an old college friend and I reconnected, years after our time studying art in Detroit, we found ourselves sharing our thoughts—the kind that bubble up after years of imagining “what if.” One idea stood out: owning a place in France. A dream, it seemed, too bold to resist. So we went for it.
Fast forward, and here we are—the proud owners of a three-story, 17th-century building in the heart of Quillan, a picturesque medieval town in the South of France. With a 12th century castle overlooking the town and all that. It’s the kind of place that feels like stepping into a storybook, with cobblestone streets, a lazy river, and the imposing Pyrenees as a backdrop.
The past two months have been a whirlwind, diving headfirst into renovating the building, transforming it from a beat up old relic into something alive with potential. As I worked on this new home, I also began carving out mental space for my long-held dream of becoming a full time artist—setting up a studio, gathering my brushes and canvases, and letting the beauty of Quillan fuel my creativity.
This blog is the story of that journey—not just the nuts and bolts of renovation, but also my personal evolution as I prepare to experience this enchanting corner of the world, embrace life as an artist, and bring my vision to life. Join me.
